Luvina Beckley serves as senior advisor at the National Resource Development Council (NRDC). Created by her enterprise, M.H.M. & Associates, the council helps underserved communities gain access to grants and funds needed for economic projects. In addition, Luvina Beckley’s council sheds light on critical issues that threaten marginalized populations.
NRDC launched a petition of protest to protect the residents in communities of color inhabiting Chicago’s southeast side. The petition asks city officials to deny the relocation of the industrial metal shredding company, General Iron, to Chicago’s southeast side, which is already suffering from dangerous levels of pollution. General Iron has been known to frequently violate environmental codes, resulting in serious explosions at their point of operations. In 2020 alone, General Iron was cited for over two dozen public health violations. NRDC lawyers who oppose the company's decision to move have commented that the construction permit drafted by General Iron doesn’t take the residents' health seriously, as it does not properly protect the community from airborne contaminants and emissions.
